More Secrets by John J. Gallagher
In April 1999, unable
to cope with overwhelming feelings of hopelessness, loneliness and inadequacy
stemming in part from a pending downsizing and a genetic predisposition
to depression, John did the unthinkable:
He jumped head-first
from the third story window of a hospital. By his own admission, he shouldn't
have survived the fall. Respecting his wishes to keep the situation private,
Trisha and the kids intentionally wove a web of stories designed to hide
the truth.
So effective were
they, that his two youngest actually thought he had been in an accident.
Indeed, John's father died never knowing the truth.
The true healing
for the Gallaghers began when they decided to lift the veil of secrecy
and write a book together about their family's experience with depression,
anxiety and two suicide attempts.
John encouraged each
family member to write a chapter for the book. It wasn't easy for John
to read what they wrote, but it started a family dialog that has led to
a deeper understanding of depression's effect on everyone.
